GUHIT PINAS - Guild for Upholding and Harnessing Indispensable Talents
A Brief History of GUHIT Pinas
This is an account of the major events and milestones that have led to the establishment of the biggest organization of Filipino visual artists in the country today—GUHIT Pinas.
FIRST VISION
GUHIT Pinas was founded by two young Bicolanos—Jaime Coralde III and Rodman Papros—who are both visionaries. They first met at a school publication where they worked together as campus journalists for over three years. Jaime was a cartoonist and Rodman was a writer. They parted ways when Rodman left the publication for the student council and finally graduated, but it did not end their bond.
An artist to begin with, Jaime had long thought of putting up a local organization that conducts various art-related projects across the Rinconada area. Though living far south, he shared this dream to Rodman who he thought could help realize it given his leadership experience. Fortunately, at the same time, Rodman had already begun his own outreach programs in several areas in Metro Manila and was looking to expand his field works.
Fascinated by Jaime's idea, Rodman agreed to help, except he wanted to make it bigger. Instead of building a local organization, he wanted to make it national so that he could incorporate his own large-scale initiatives.
The first vision was a healthy, dynamic, and purposeful community of Filipino visual artists. To achieve this, they have to find a way to get as many Filipino visual artists as possible to commune, interact, and mature together. And so they turned to social media, particularly Facebook.
